Pvt Larry P. Whelan attended Rahway High School. He was employed by the Aluminum Co. of American as a driver before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 8 January 1941. He went overseas in December 1942, participated in the invasion of Sicily and was part of his unit during the entire campaign in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

Hie died as a result of an explosion.
