Pvt Everett H. Waterland's father died in 1920 when Everett was a little boy, and his mother remarried.

He worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad before he enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on 16 June 1944.
