S/Sgt Charles C. Miller graduated from Northside High School in 1940. He was employed at the Corning Glass Works at the Fall Brook plant. He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Buffalo, New York on 25 March 1942. In September 1943, he was assigned to the Air Corps and trained in Nevada. In March 1944 he was transferred from the Air Corps to the infantry and assigned to artillery and trained at Camp Cooke. He was sent overseas in February 1945.
On 1 April he was part of a raiding party to cross the Rhine River into enemy territory searching for enemy gun placements. When he was wounded in the arm and leg, he was placed in a boat with three other wounded men and the group of volunteers tried to recross the Rhine River to safety. Only one man survived, Charles Schmidt who visited the Miller family after the war.
His brother, Bernard F. Miller, wrote a book dedicated to him: "Mission Across the Rhine: A biography of Charles Miller".
