More information

Sgt Lloyd G. Hasfurther graduated from Genesee High School in 1940. He was an outstanding athlete and had received invitations from colleges to play football. He was a member of the Genesee American Legion baseball team when it played for district, regional and the state championship. He was well known in this community and was well liked by his many friends, both young and old.

He enlisted in Spokane, Washington on 21 November 1942. When he entered the service he first trained at Camp Beale, California and then went to Camp Bowie, Texas, where his tank battalion joined its division, and left for overseas.

He was married in Texas on 4 November, 1944.
A comrade, William Emerson, explained in a letter to his parents what happened on that tragic day. He wrote that Sgt Hasfurther was moving his tank up as a point for his company in a meadow when a German anti-tank shell hit the mounted machinegun in front of him, killing him instantly. Of the crew of five, two men survived. William “Billy” Emerson was in the same company but not with a tank crew.

The name of the tank was "Absent".
