T/5 Albert S. Harte attended Poughkeepsie High School and was employed at the Whale drug store. He was active in sports and participated in the annual tennis tournaments.

He enlisted in Albany, New York on 16 November 1942 and was sent overseas in July 1944, as a member of an ordnance unit.

His unit was composed of African American personnel with African American junior officers and white senior officers.
