1st Lt Thomas C. Gaines Jr. graduated from Louisville Mal High School and the University of Kentucky.

He was employed with the Kentucky Lithographing Company, of which his father was the president.

He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, on 17 March 1942.

He is memorialized at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
