Walter Harris enlisted on 26 March 1943 in Fresno, California.

He joined his unit from a replacement depot on 22 July 1944 and was lightly injured in action on 13 August 1944. After recovering, he rejoined his unit. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
