Lt John R. Toop attended Yale University where he received his B.A. degree in 1929. He was a master at Saint Paul's School from 1929 to 1931. He attended the Yale Graduate School in English and History in the period 1931-1934.

According to the Navylog Lt John R. Toop was lost at sea but eventually his body had been recovered.
