More information

Pvt George Laine joined his unit from Replacement Depot on 17 July 1944. He was seriously wounded in action on 30 July 1944. About his wound, he wrote some letters home who were published in a local newspaper:
"August 1, 1944. I'm in a hospital somewhere in Normandy getting a couple of scratches patched up. I'm not in any danger and expect to be back in the thick of it soon. I can't say just what the nature of it is, but it is slight and I'm resting up now."
"August 7, 1944. Just to let you know I'm still alright. I'm in an army hospital in England. I don't expect to be here much longer as I am almost well. I hardly know what to make of all the comforts, soft bed, white sheets and nothing to do but take it easy. The nurses are all American and wery good to us. I am anxious to get back to my outfit and the boys."
