S/Sgt. Pettit attended Eastern High School and was employed by the Fruehauf Trailer Co. in Detroit before he enlisted on 3 February 1942.

He was slightly wounded in France on 15 August 1944 and was back in action on 28 August 1944. He was seriously wounded on 17 September 1944 and passed away three days later, probably at a field hospital in Germany.
