More information

A/C 308 hit by flak between No. 1 and 2 engines 2 miles S.W. of Magdeburg, Germany. Engine No. 1 was then feathered by the pilot. Dropped bombs. A/C 308 left formation flying S.W. under control but losing altitude. four men bailed out just before the aircraft went into a tight spin. A/C 308 hit the ground. Altough no other chutes were reported, the aircraft was apparently not on fire or breaking up as it fell.

There are several lectures about what was happening to Capt Wesley E. Carter. He would have reached the ground safely and then be mistreated by German citizens. But another account, based on information of a German intelligence officer relayed to another crew member, supposed that Wesley was injured when he bailed out. He was not able to assist in properly deploying his parachute, and thus was killed.
