Pvt Eugene Austin was a chauffeur before he enlisted at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.He died in a German civilian hospital in Melsungen after being shot in the head by military police. The exact circumstances are not known.
Pvt Austin was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery at Breuna, Germany on the same day of his death. Later, he was transported to Margraten and buried at block PP, row 9, grave 213 on 28 July 1945. He was disinterred on 3 September 1948 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on the same day. He was given his final resting place on 16 December 1948.
