Cpl Vernon L. Berrey enlisted in Denver, Colorado on 30 January 1943. He attended college for 2 years and was a salesman before he enlisted.

He suffered a shell fragment wound in his right side. He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Breuna, Germany on 14 April 1945. Later, he was moved to Margraten and buried there in a temporary grave on 10 July 1945. He was again disinterred on 23 August 1948 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 26 August 1948. He was given his final resting place at Margraten on 26 April 1949.
Cpl Berrey and Zoe Vee Gephart were married in Denver in November, 1940, where they made their home until he enlisted in the armed forces. He received his military training at Camp Howze, Texas, Camp Livingston, Shreveport, Louisiana, and Camp San Luis Obispo, California. He left for overseas duty on 1 February 1945.

His brother, S/Sgt Zane Richard (Dick) Berrey, 20, was killed in action on Morotai on 30 April 1945 is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery at Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines. Both young men starred in athletics while attending Montpelier High School.
