Pvt Layton joined the Reconnaissance Company, 67th Armored Regiment on 9 August 1944 from the 41st Replacement Battalion. He fought in France and Belgium before being killed in action on 16 September 1944 in the Meerssen area.He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery, of Fosse, Belgium.
