S/Sgt Clarence E. Teats worked at the Freeburg Silk Mills before he enlisted at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 28 June 1942. In July 1943, he went to A.P. Hill Military Reservation, Bowling Green, Virginia, and in October he arrived at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He spent the month November at Camp Boniface, Michigan for special ski training.
