Pvt Frederick W. Goempel Jr. was a student at the Central Catholic High School before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 5 September 1944. He was sent overseas on 13 January 1945.He was reported missing in action during the Sauer River crossing near Echternach, Luxembourg. He stepped in a minefield.
