More information

Sgt Aubrey T. Garrigus attended high school for four years and was employed at the Carnegie Steel Corporation before he enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 27 March 1942.

Sgt Garrigus, who previously had lost an eye in combat, insisted on rejoining his unit.

Sgt Garrigus had conducted himself gallantly in action, leading two patrols in dangerous reconnaissance missions and killing an enemy officer and five enlisted men with a grenade when his patrol was pinned down by enemy fire.

He was killed by an artillery shell while placing guards on outposts.

After the war a barrack located on 13th Cavalry Road at Fort Knox was named "Garrigus Hall" in his honor.
