2nd Lt Barnhill had been employed by a pipeline company in Dodge City, Kansas before entering the army.

He was awarded the Silver Star for actions in France on 21 August 1944 during which he was wounded. The citation stated: 'The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Burnis D. Barnhill (ASN: 33148705), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Armored Division, in action in France, on 21 August 1944. Staff Sergeant Barnhill's gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.'
