Pvt John J. Graham graduated from Walhalla High School in the 1943 and attended Clemson College for one semester. He was a typesetter at the Keowee Courier newspaper.

He enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 26 February 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944 and joined the division at Mourmelon, France, where it was refitting and retraining
