More information

In September 1945, the remains of Pvt Sam Cathey were discovered in an isolated grave in a field near the farm "De Witte Hoeve", marked with a wooden cross. It is believed he was killed in that area, together with another member of his unit, who was also buried at the same spot. At the moment of the discovery, Pvt Cathey couldn't be identified and his remains were marked as Unknown T-2319 and evacuated to Margraten.

On the basis of a tooth chart a positive identification could be made in May 1947.

He is commemorated on a monument unveiled in Ospel, the Netherlands on 6 November 2019 in memory of the American soldiers who fell during the liberation of the town.
