2nd Lt Maurice J. Sample was a salesman for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company before he joined Air Crops of the U.S. Army Reserve in Portland, Oregon on 11 June 1942. He was sent overseas on 1 July 1944.

Sgt Joseph F. Cullen:
Sample was seriously injured in leg and head. He called back and said we were going all the way home on two engines. Then the plane was hit. Plane crashed in enemy territory.

He is remembered on a memorial cross on a hiking trail at Kell am See.
