S/Sgt Bill Lewis worked on the family farm before he enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia, on 28 April 1942.

He was killed when a jeep, of which he was an occupant, ran over an enemy mine.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
