More information

Capt Edward J. Hackett graduated from New York University of Medicine in 1933. He received his commission at Fort Benning, Georgia in July 1942.

He was married to Evelyn R. Minan on 22 January 1935.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation cited: For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against enemy while serving as Medical Officer with the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 7th Armored Division, on 13 September 1944, in France. On many occasions Capt. Hackett went forward under enemy fire to aid wounded and evacuate. On 13 September, in the woods near Malmaison, France, he went to within 10 yards of where the enemy was dug in to aid a wounded man. In doing so he was mortally wounded. Capt. Hackett's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.

He died the same day in an aid station.
