Pvt Norwood E. Whittemore worked in an office of the U. S. Army Engineers before he enlisted at Camp Branding, Florida on 24 February 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his back while laying radio wire.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.

He is remembered at the Riverside Memorial Park, Jacksonville, Duval, Florida and on the Nassau County War Memorial at the end of Centre St. in Amelia Island, Florida.
