On the morning of 3 February 1945, Lt Preston was killed in action during the attack on Herrlisheim. The attack lead off at 0300 in the morning. Companies I and K met heavy resistance including machine gun and mortar fire and point blank German tank fire. They became disorganized once they got inside the town. Lt.
