On the morning of 3 February 1945, Lt Preston was killed in action during the attack on Herrlisheim. The attack lead off at 0300 in the morning. Companies I and K met heavy resistance including machine gun and mortar fire and point blank German tank fire. They became disorganized once they got inside the town. Lt. Preston went from building to building to try and reorganize the men but was killed in the attempt.
