Sgt Leo J. Bartus graduated from Woodlawn High School and was employed by Bethlehem Steel Company.

He enlisted in Buffalo, New York on 3 December 1942.

The M4 (105) Sherman Assault Gun, of which Sgt Bartus was the commander, was hit two times by shells, fired by a German tank, killing two crew members.
