More information
1st Lt Rupert E. White graduated from Bristol High School in 1937 and attended the University of Vermont. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For heroic achivement in miltiary operations against the enemy in western Europe. During the period 2 July 1944 to 23 November 1944, 1st Lt White distinguished himself by his consistently sound judgment, aggressiveness and execution. From 16 November 1944 to 23 November 1944, while his unit supported an attack by the 29th infantry division he was required to act as forward observer, often from positions dangerously close to the enemy. It was on just this type of mission that he was killed when he attempted under heavy enemy shelling to direct the fire of his platoon. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty, always of the highest were a credit to himself and the military service.
