S/Sgt John T. Ramer enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 29 September 1942.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously for actions on the day of his death. The citation reads in part: For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Kapellen, Germany, on 3 March 1945. Staff Sergeant Ramer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 83d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
