Pvt Carl E. Nielsen immigrated to the United States on 23 December 1919 under the name Karl Edvan Nielsen. On his Petition for Naturalization form he requested that his name should be changed to Carl Edward Nielsen.He enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 23 July 1943 and had been overseas since April of that year.
He was a crew member of the command tank of 2nd Platoon. The tank was hit by enemy anti-tank fire.
