Cpl Clyde A. Matthews enlisted at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio on 9 December 1941. He went overseas in September, 1942, took part in North African, Sicilian invasions and campaigns and in the fighting in France, Belgium and Holland. He won the Silver Star for gallantry in combat as a tank crewman April 30, 1943 during the Tunisian campaign. Four of his brothers also served.

He worked in a glass factory before he enlisted.
