More information

Sgt Charles H. Jefferson was a chauffeur before he enlisted at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 27 July 1943.

In the late afternoon of 27 February 1945, Charles was severely wounded in the attack on Wassenberg, Germany. His medical records show that he was brought into an aid station with a penetrating head wound, caused by an artillery shell or cannon fire. His condition was severe and therefore, in just a matter of hours, he was rushed to the 110th Clearing Station and then to the 105th Evacuation Hospital, which was set up in some buildings belonging to the church by the name 'Heilig Hart van Jezuskerk' in the Dutch city of Sittard at the time. Charles never regained consciousness. He passed away at 8.10 AM on 1 March and was buried that same afternoon in Margraten.
