M/Sgt Howard O. Hoonsbeen graduated from Alma Center High school in 1927. He completed a business course at La Crosse University and was employed as a chief clerk by the North Western Railroad.He was sent overseas in December 1943.
He was fatally injured in a traffic accident near Landen, Belgium on 14 August 1945 when the jeep in which he was riding, was struck by a truck. He suffered exterior lacerations, a broken pelvic bone and ruptured internal organs. He was taken to a hospital in Liège, Belgium. Because his injuries were so severe, an immediate operation was necessary. It appeared for a while that he would survive but past away on 28 August 1945.
He was initially buried in a temporary grave at Margraten a day later.
