More information
David Hertig attended the University of Minnesota from 1941 to 1943. While in college he joined the U.S. Army ROTC program. His goal after the war was to become a medical doctor. He met his wife, Alice Ray Hobgood, at a dance at the University in January 1942 and they were married on 24 December 1942.
He joined his unit from a replacement depot on 12 August 1944 and got promoted to Pfc on 15 September 1944.
According to the after action report of his unit, Pfc Hertig was on a night patrol which was ambushed. He was wounded in the firefight and was seen walking off the battlefield. He however did not make it back to American lines and it was thought that he may have been taken prisoner. Sadly instead, he was found buried in a civilian cemetery in the area of Gillrath, Germany. After the war his body was moved to the American War Cemetery in Margraten.
His father, Marshall Hertig, also served during the war. Due to his education he was made a major in the Medical Corps.
