T/5 Charles L. Thomas graduate from Roosevelt High School and attended Fresno State College. He played cello in the college symphony orchestra for six years.

He was employed by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica beore he enlisted on 1 January 1943.. He was sent overseas in September 1943

T/5 Thomas was driving the company commander, Capt Finney, around. They stopped in front of an aid station, when an enemy shell burst near by. By the time Thomas was gotten inside the aid station, he was too far gone to do anything for him. Cap. Finney was wounded in the leg, hand and cheek, but nothing fatal. He was evacuated.
