More information

Pvt Edward Gladding attended St. John's Academy.

He in Hartford, Connecticut on 25 January 1943 and was sent overseas in May 1943. He participated in the D-Day invasion.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action against the enemy at Keslar on the date of his death. The citation cited: Pvt Gladding notes a seriously wounded infantryman lying in an open field which was being subjected to an intense enemy artillery barrage. Disregarding his own personal safety, Pvt Gladding, amidst continuous shelling, crawled to the wounded man and administered first aid treatment. While this valiant soldier was carrying the wounded man to a place of safety both were mortally wounded by another artillery barrage. The outstanding courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Pvt Gladding, while trying to save the life of a wounded comrade, reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
