Lt John L. Dougherty graduated from Bethlehem Catholic High School and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1941. He was a financial institution clerk.

He enlisted in Richmond, Virginia on 7 August 1941 and was sent overseas in August 1943.

The plane #42-31538 collided with plane #42-31236 after being attacked by a FW 190 of II/JG26.

All crew members of both airplanes, twenty men in total, were killed.
